Planting where a blue spruce once stood......?
You might need to add some topsoil to fill the void left by the stump/roots.
I might suggest leveling the area and letting it settle before planting something else. Plant a cover (like annual ryegrass) and maybe by spring the soil will have settled and you can re-plant.
Probably wouldn't think in terms of another spruce or pine in case there are still the bugs that infested the tree in the soil.
Reply:I would plant grass there for now and see how well it grows.
Reply:Did you remove the stump or have it ground up?
If you had it ground, the soil will eventually settle as the grindings decompose and the voids in the soil fill in.
If you pulled it and back filled the hole with soil, you will still experience some settling, but not as much.
In either case, you can plant whatever you like over it, just leave the soil a little high to account for the settling.
We had the same thing done and trimmed the stumps close to the ground. We then created an island bed for planting some grasses and wild flowers, burying the stumps completely. They will eventually rot away, but it will take quite a few years.
