I read a reference that says chicory will have pink flowers rather than blue when growing over anthills, because of ant induced acidity. Was a very old reference, and I wouldn't credit it too much, but is acidity different over anthills? you could save me a few bucks on a pH test kit if you know already!
Is soil acidity affected by ants?
Yes soil acidity is affected by ants. This was proven in two studies:
Wali and Kannowski (1975) and Wagner et al. (1997) showed that ant mounds increase soil acidity.

Reply:pH of soil is ALWAYS affected by addition of acid or base. The question is how much.
If soil is strongly buffered the change will be very small and only local. Unless the change is large the pH test kit will not be useful.
Reply:yea DUMB!!!
Reply:Now.. that is interesting.. Ants give off a very acidic salava and I would suspect, based on that, that the acidity of the soil would become more acidic..
