How much is too much for a wedding cake?

I found this great cake and it would be three tiers with allot of icing to feed 100 people.. The cost will be $300. Is that a decent amount or am I paying too much? Secondly, I have blue flowers that will be cascading along side the cake. The flowers will be made with icing. Will that be too much icing. Should I change the design. Or, do you think that people will actually eat it.

I like the idea with the flowers...or you could do REAL flowers....it's up to you.

Reply:$3.00 per serving is definitely a moderate price, it's what we are paying for our cake as well. I don't think it is too much icing if that is look that you want, go for it! If people don't want that much frosting, they don't have to eat the flowers. Everyone loves and expects wedding cake at a wedding so I don't think that you will have a problem with getting people to eat it!
Reply:Thats a very good price. Dont worry about the icing. ppl will scrape it off if that dont want that much. It sounds truly beatiful. I wouldnt change a thing.
Reply:That sounds about average to me. If you are concerned about too much icing have you considered using real flowers? You can just have them removed for serving.

Reply:Depends what part of the country (assuming US here) that you live. I live in a costly part (SF bay area) and my cake for about 130 was $500.00. That is pretty typical. Ask/shop around.



The Flowers sound fine to me. If someone isn't interested they just won't eat it! Congratulations :)
Reply:It depends on where you live. The going rate in So Cal is $4.25 per slice so $300 is good! There's no such thing as too much icing on a wedding cake!! :) If people don't like all that icing they will just eat around it. Don't fret, I'm sure it will be gorgeous...and delicious!

Reply:That's a pretty good price for a cake like that, i think that would be a really good design, and people eat with their eyes before anything else and it sounds like a very beautiful cake. It's also cake so of course people will eat it.

Tell your florist gum paste instead of icing that will help.
Reply:$3 per slice isn't a bad price if your baker is making all of your flowers. That takes alot of time and effort.



Are your sure it's icing and not gumpaste? If it's gumpaste the flowers will be hard and guests can just pick them off. Even if it's regular icing they can scrape it with a fork if they find it too sweet. If you are truly worried then I would go find some pretty silk flowers the baker can use....that might even bring down the price since it will require less man hours.
Reply:Three dollars a slice is a great price. Don't worry about the frosting flowers. They look pretty and if people don't want to eat them it isn't a big deal. Personally I love buttercream roses!! My wedding cake had buttercream roses (in blue %26amp; ivory) on top and cascading down the side of a 3 tier white frosted cake. It was very pretty and yummy too. The buttercream roses are the least expensive option you have. If you want your guests to be able to take the roses off they can make the roses out of royal icing. They will be hard and crunchy like merengues but they are still piped and look just like the buttercream ones. Gumpaste roses are difficult to make and very time consuming. 1 gumpaste rose can take 5-10 minutes to create. If you want a whole bunch of them it is going to add to the cost of your cake by a whole lot - maybe even double it due the the work involved.

Reply:You got a good price. That is basically $3 a slice. Roughly what I am paying as well. You cake sounds like it will be nice but have you considered fresh flowers if you think it may have too much icing. Just a thought to consider. I am having 4 tier cake (top for anniversary) and three cheesecakes and it was somewhere around 500-600. Can't exactly remember cause Mom paid for it. You did good!
